The Ultimate Guide to Ouray, Colorado: 15 Things to Do in the “Switzerland of America”

Nicknamed the Switzerland of America, Ouray is hands-down one of my favorite mountain towns in Colorado. Tucked into the heart of the San Juan Mountains, it’s easy to see how this stunning town earned its alpine-inspired moniker. Towering peaks surround the valley in every direction, giving you that classic European mountain village feel — without ever leaving the U.S.

Ouray is a true gem for Colorado travel lovers, especially those who crave a mix of adventure, charm, and history. Whether you’re into hiking, rock climbing, canyoneering, off-roading, or ice climbing, you’ll find your fix here. But Ouray also holds its own as a destination beyond the outdoor thrills — with rich mining history dating back to 1876, charming Victorian architecture, local shops, relaxing hot springs, and a laid-back vibe that’s far more approachable than, say, Telluride.

I visited last fall and loved it so much I’m heading back this summer — so I’m sure this list will grow. But for now, here are 15 things to do in and around Ouray, Colorado, from scenic drives and secret waterfalls to rooftop cocktails and saloon history.

Explore the Town of Ouray

1. Stay at the newly-renovated Western Hotel

One of my favorite hotel stays in Colorado, the newly renovated Western Hotel & Spa combines historic charm with modern comforts. The building transports you to another era — but thankfully, the rooms come with new, comfortable beds (a rarity in older properties), functional mini kitchens, and updated amenities. There’s now a relaxing spa on-site and one of the best restaurants in Colorado, right inside the hotel. More on that below…

2. Wander Main Street (a National Historic District)

Ouray’s Main Street is a walkable slice of history, lined with 1800s-era buildings, mountain views, and an eclectic mix of shops. You’ll find everything from antique furniture, to elegant jewelry, to taxidermied animals playing poker. Favorites of mine include The Gator Emporium, Twig+Feather, Rockin P Ranch, Silver Lynx, Grateful Goods, and The Blue Pear.

3. Relax at Ouray Hot Springs

Right in the center of town, Ouray Hot Springs is the perfect post-hike or post-adventure treat. These sulfur-free mineral pools are family-friendly and scenic, and the water is considered sacred and healing by the Ute Indians — including Chief Ouray, after whom the town is named. The pools are family-friendly and tickets are $26 for adults, $16 for youth, and free for children under 4. Pool hours are Mon-Fri 12pm-9pm and Sat/Sat 11am-9pm.

4. Sip a Rooftop Drink at Imogene Hotel

The Imogene Hotel rooftop bar is a must for sunset. Think: fire pit, 360-degree mountain views, and a low-key mountain-town vibe. Open Thurs–Sat from 4–8pm (ish). Check @theimogene on Instagram for updated hours.

5. Grab a Beer at Ouray Brewery

Enjoy local craft beer on a picture-perfect rooftop at Ouray Brewery. Their Camp Bird Blonde Ale even won “Best Lighter/Summer Beer” at the San Juan Brewfest. Food-wise, it’s casual — burgers, wings, salads — making it a better lunch stop than dinner.

6. Taste Colorado Wine

It’s not just a beer town! Try a wine tasting at Sauvage Spectrum, featuring wines sourced from Palisade, Colorado. (Check out my full guide to wine tasting in Palisade if you’re curious about Colorado wine country.)

7. Enjoy Craft Cocktails at The Saloon at The Western

Located in its original 1890s location, the saloon at The Western retains its vintage charm while serving craft cocktails with a historic twist. The bar is open 12–10pm daily, and dinner reservations are available for the restaurant starting at 5pm.

8. Dine at The Kitchen at The Western

If you eat one meal in Ouray, let it be here. The Kitchen at The Western is rooted in farm-to-fire cooking and features locally sourced, seasonal ingredients prepared over an open hearth. The Chef’s Counter experience is especially magical — you’ll sit fireside and watch the team bring their culinary vision to life.

9. Discover Mi Mexico Family Mexican

Tucked behind The Western, this unassuming Mexican spot is a great hidden gem. Super friendly service, delicious food, and zero touristy vibes. Don’t miss the spicy shrimp and micheladas — perfect for a casual dinner.

10. Visit the Local Dive Bar

If you’re looking to go full Colorado mountain town, head to Silver Eagle Saloon. This classic dive bar comes complete with a pool table, jukebox, and zero pretense. As the locals say, it’s not a matter of where you’re going out after dinner, but whether you’re going to the Silver Eagle.

Outdoor Adventures Around Ouray

11. See Cascade Falls

Just a short walk from downtown, Cascade Falls is especially striking in the spring. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also climb to the Upper Falls for an extra scenic workout.

12. Hike the Perimeter Trail

This 5.4-mile loop is one of the best ways to see Ouray from all angles — but be warned, it’s a challenge! Expect 1,500 ft of elevation gain, narrow cliffside paths, and jaw-dropping views. Definitely wear good shoes, bring water, and avoid it if you’re afraid of heights.

13. Explore Box Cañon
Accessible via the Perimeter Trail or by car (with a ~$7 entry/parking fee), Box Cañon Falls Park offers a dramatic gorge, waterfall, and short trails to explore. A great spot for photos and a breath of misty mountain air.

14. Drive the Million Dollar Highway

This iconic stretch of U.S. Route 550 south to Silverton is one of the most scenic drives in America — but also one of the most nerve-wracking. The narrow, winding roads cling to the cliffs, but the views are spectacular. Pro tips: drive only in good weather, but it’s not too far to the “Switzerland of America” sign with scenic pull-off. It’s another 1-hour drive south to Silverton (and then further on). There are also lots of amazing hikes along this road, too, and I’m a big fan of AllTrails for finding the right one for you.

15. Make the Trip to Telluride

About an hour in the opposite direction from Silverton lies Telluride, another Colorado gem. Take the free gondola for jaw-dropping views, wander the charming downtown, and plan to spend a couple of days if you can — there’s a lot to see and do here too.

Bonus: Adventure Tours from Ouray

While we stuck to mostly free or low-cost activities this time, Ouray is a hub for outdoor adventure tours — including:

  • Off-roading Jeep trips
  • Ice climbing tours in winter
  • Canyoneering, rock climbing, and more

Plenty of local outfitters offer half-day or full-day trips, so if you’re up for some high-adrenaline Colorado adventure, this is a great basecamp.

Note: This trip was not sponsored by the city of Ouray or any of the businesses listed above. The only hosted element was a discounted stay at The Western, which I personally reached out to. All opinions are my own.
